Spring Break is Over: Welcome Back

Lawmakers return to a crowded and polarizing schedule. Here's what you need to know this week.

This week is shaping up to be a busy, and potentially messy, one. Leaders in both chambers of Congress are bracing for tough fights as messaging priorities collide with real policy and governance challenges, all set against the backdrop of an escalating conflict in Iran.

Beyond Capitol Hill, developments across the veterans landscape point to both momentum and ongoing gaps. From new approaches to treating PTSD and efforts to improve access to care in rural communities to changes in how veteran status is defined at the state level, these stories illustrate how policy shifts are directly shaping veterans’ day-to-day realities. Here’s what you need to know coming back from the break.

NEWS DRIVING THE WEEK

Rep. Chris Deluzio and other Democrats are pushing hard to fill swing district ballots with veteran candidates.

Congressional News

Republicans are aiming to center their messaging on tax cuts ahead of Tax Day, but a series of competing crises is complicating that push on Capitol Hill. Ongoing scandals involving multiple lawmakers, the lengthy DHS shutdown, and rising economic concerns tied to the Iran conflict are drawing attention away from the GOP’s economic agenda. At the same time, internal divisions persist over how to resolve the shutdown, advance the SAVE America Act, and handle surveillance authorities set to expire. On the other side of the aisle, Democrats are preparing war powers votes that could further fracture Republican unity.

Democrats are also increasingly recruiting military veterans to run for Congress as they look to reclaim a House majority, viewing service backgrounds as a way to strengthen credibility on national security and public trust. Leaders like Rep. Chris Deluzio are actively mentoring and supporting veteran candidates, particularly in competitive swing districts, where more than a dozen veterans are expected to run this cycle. The strategy builds on past success in 2018, when veteran candidates helped Democrats flip key seats, and reflects a broader effort to elevate voices with firsthand military experience amid ongoing debates over war powers and foreign policy.

Veteran News

Researchers and advocates are continuing to explore psychedelic-assisted therapy as a potential PTSD treatment for veterans, particularly as many do not respond to traditional care. Early studies suggest substances like psilocybin may reduce symptoms when paired with therapy, and veteran-led groups are expanding access through guided programs. Some veterans report significant personal improvements, helping drive policy interest and investment in clinical trials. While momentum is growing at the state level, however, key experts caution that more research is needed before widespread adoption.

The VA is launching a $7 million grant program to expand free transportation services for veterans in highly rural areas, where access to care is often limited by distance. The funding will support organizations that help veterans travel to VA or VA-authorized medical appointments, and eligible veterans will not need to take any action. With millions of rural veterans facing long travel times, sometimes hundreds of miles, officials say the initiative aims to reduce missed appointments and improve long-term health outcomes.

New Hampshire lawmakers are moving to expand the state’s definition of “veteran” to include those with general discharges under honorable conditions, a group currently excluded from certain state benefits. This change would extend access to programs like property tax exemptions and hiring preferences, aligning state policy more closely with federal standards. Supporters say the update would close a longstanding gap affecting up to 10% of former servicemembers who were otherwise eligible for VA benefits.

National News

Four U.S. Navy sailors played a critical role in recovering NASA’s Artemis II astronauts after their historic lunar flyby, conducting initial medical assessments and safely assisting the crew out of the Orion capsule following splashdown. The mission marked the first crewed trip around the moon in 50 years, with the recovery team drawing on specialized dive medicine training to support astronaut safety. The Artemis II crew also set a new record for the farthest distance traveled by humans, demonstrating the exciting possibilities of future space exploration.

FOR FUN

For all the Washington Capitals fans out there, Alex Ovechkin played what could have been his final NHL game this past weekend against the Pittsburgh Penguins. While we’re hoping he sticks around a bit longer, it’s been an absolute honor watching the Great 8 at work. 🏒
