NEWS DRIVING THE WEEK

Congressional News

House Republicans return this week facing a compressed timeline to advance a third reconciliation package before lawmakers leave for the July 4 recess. GOP leaders are expected to hold another high-level meeting Wednesday as they work to reach agreement on spending offsets, policy priorities, and a budget resolution needed to unlock the reconciliation process, though divisions remain between fiscal conservatives and vulnerable incumbents.

New York's Democratic congressional primaries on June 23 are drawing national attention as an early test of progressive influence within the Democratic Party. Much of the focus is on the political weight of endorsements from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose backing of several candidates could help shape the party's direction heading into the 2026 midterms, even as polling suggests his endorsement alone is not enough to guarantee victory.

The House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees are also preparing for a busy week of oversight and legislative activity. Lawmakers are expected to examine VA operations, benefits delivery, and several pending veterans policy proposals as momentum builds around the Take Care of America's Veterans Act.

Veteran News

On June 10th, Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran (R-KS) and House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Bost (R-IL) introduced the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, a sweeping legislative package that combines more than 60 veterans bills into a single measure. The proposal includes provisions related to healthcare access, caregiver support, education benefits, survivor assistance, disability compensation, and the Major Richard Star Act, making it one of the most comprehensive veterans packages considered in recent years.

In a recent interview with The Nimitz Group CEO, Justin Brown, Chairman Bost described the legislation as an effort to move long-standing bipartisan veterans priorities across the finish line. He emphasized the bill's broad coalition of support and highlighted its focus on improving services and benefits for veterans, military families, caregivers, and survivors. You can watch the interview here.

The Department of Veterans Affairs recently launched its new Partial Claim Program, giving eligible veterans with VA-backed home loans a new tool to avoid foreclosure. Veterans who complete a three-month trial payment plan can have missed mortgage payments moved into a subordinate lien that does not accrue interest and is repaid only when the home is sold, refinanced, or the mortgage is otherwise satisfied.

VA also highlighted Fort Meade, South Dakota, in its Rural Community Profile series, showcasing efforts to improve care for veterans living in rural areas. The profile details how local VA facilities are expanding access through telehealth, community partnerships, transportation support, and specialized programs designed to address the unique challenges faced by rural veterans.

National News

Vice President JD Vance reported "very, very good" progress following the first round of U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland, signaling optimism about the administration's efforts to negotiate a broader agreement with Tehran. The talks come as both countries work under a 60-day framework established by a recent memorandum of understanding, with negotiators focused on nuclear issues, sanctions, and long-term monitoring mechanisms.

Despite the administration's optimism, a new CBS News/YouGov poll found most Americans remain skeptical of President Trump's memorandum of understanding with Iran. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said the conflict created more problems than it solved, while nearly seven in ten Americans said they do not believe the agreement has achieved the administration's stated goal of permanently stopping Iran's nuclear program.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Yesterday was a very, very good day. We made a lot of good progress. We did exactly what we wanted to do."
